Polygonus leo occurs in the tropical Americas from southern Florida and Texas south to Brazil and Argentina; also in the West Indies. It inhabits openings and edges of tropical dry forests, thornscrub, pinelands, and gardens. The caterpillar feeds on leaves of legumes (Fabaceae).
